This dress’s silhouette emphasizes the contrast between its narrow waist and wide skirt.
Undergarments called crinolines supported the skirts of such dresses, maintaining the desired profile.
By about 1850, heavy crinolines of wool and horsehair gave way to the hoop crinoline, which employed a series of graduated light steel hoops connected by fabric tape.
