Gallery Labels
This figure presents a problem of ethnic identification. On stylistic grounds, it can be identified as coming from Central Africa. However, there is a question of whether the carving originates from Gabon among the Fang or neighboring people, or from northern Angola among the Orimbunbu or neighboring people. The elegance and sculptural sophistication of the figure is enhanced by a well-worn, lustrous surface.
