From the mid-15th through mid-16th centuries, the pomegranate motif was the dominant pattern in Italian velvets. This velvet, dating from about 1450, shows a typical design of the time. Very thin, simple lines outline the design. Silk velvet was one of the most luxurious, most costly and most labor-intensive of all fabrics during the period and was desired by the wealthy and the noble.
