Capes adorned with kiwi feathers were highly prized for their decorative and ceremonial significance. Kiwis, native to New Zealand, are flightless birds with shaggy feathers. The detailed colorful border of this cape is elaborately woven in complex geometric patterns.
The Maoris, the indigenous Polynesian people of New Zealand, arrived there in the1300s. Maori feathered capes became fashionable after contact with Europeans, and were regarded as prestigious garments for both sexes.
