Asian Art (Japanese and Korean)
Eliza M. Niblack, Indianapolis, Indiana; given to the John Herron Art Institute, now the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, in 1916.
The fan and the fireworks suggest a summer evening as three young ladies enjoy playing with sparklers. Their open, innocent expressions add to the charm of this carefree scene.
Kiyonaga is considered one of the greatest masters of prints of beautiful women. Compared to the work of the earlier master Harunobu, his figures are fuller, more substantial, and seem more down-to-earth and approachable.
