四代 山下亀之丞
Masafusa specialized in images of actors and beauties (bijin). In fact, since women and young boys were banned from the Kabuki stage in the mid-1600s, this print actually depicts a male playing a female role. The need for men to believably play female roles encouraged the development of the art of acting. Eventually female impersonators became models of femininity. Kamenojō IV, active from 1758–1788, specialized in wife roles.
This print is completely re-margined on the right. It entered the collection more than a century ago, in 1906.
