This is a wonderful example of what is known as sueki (Sue ware), the earliest high-fired ceramics made in Japan. Used to hold liquids, its rounded bottom prevents it from tipping over. A great amount of natural ash-glaze still covers the vitreous clay body, displaying a rich green color where the glaze is thickest. The crease encircling the shoulder (where the separately potted top and bottom were joined) is echoed by the incised line around the neck, adding a subtle touch of elegance to the design. The spout and body work together to create a dynamic yet harmoniously balanced form in terms of line (profile) and proportion.
