I was commissioned by L.S. Ayres to create a work in fiber representing Indiana. I turned to nature and the timeless theme of changing seasons, which are so distinctive in the Midwest and have such a strong influence on the lifestyle here. The tree provided a symbol that illustrates the continual and enduring cycles and became the central motif connecting the various background scenes of rural and urban life.
During the 1970s there was a movement of renewed interest and activity in the fiber arts. I was exploring the application of my printmaking techniques to fabric and used the silkscreen and dye to create the images. I was also exploring and revisiting the traditional stitchery techniques learned as a child. The end result is an integration of the traditional methods with the screen-printing process.
