Gallery Labels
Gold or silver embroidery was expensive and therefore reserved for textiles used for special occasions. The unusual needlework in this example incorporates strips of silver or silver-gilded strips on cotton fabric. The patterns here are bolder and more abstract than in typical examples of Fez needlework because the rigid metallic strips made it difficult to execute the small, complicated designs characteristic of silk embroidery.
