E. Hardey Adriance Fine Arts Acquisition Fund in memory of Marguerite Hardey Adriance
(Jacques Hautelet, La Jolla, California) purchased by Indianapolis Museum of Art (May 18, 2000).
This ceremonial cape was worn with a wraparound skirt. The fabric of this cape was over-dyed before the beadwork was applied; its color was chosen to imitate bark cloth. The beaded circles reference kraals—hut villages or animal enclosures maintained within villages in South Africa.
Beadwork, which is applied by women, is an integral part of South African ceremonial garments. Before the introduction of imported glass beads in the 20th century, decorations consisted of seeds, shells, and other natural items.
