• Burliuk combines modern imagery—the man in the top hat and the airplane—with classical themes. The musical instrument next to the seated nude man may identify him as the Cyclops Polyphemus. In Greek mythology, the lumbering giant Polyphemus aspired to win the love of a beautiful sea nymph and clumsily wooed her with song.
• The loosely dappled application of watercolor in rich jewel tones lends a dreamlike feeling.
• Referring to Burliuk’s ability to work confidently across different artistic media, the Russian Futurist poet Vladimir Mayakovsky observed: “David Burliuk is a nomad. He pitches his tent beneath every sky.”
