三美人
Despite the damaged condition of this print, one can still appreciate the beauty of the imagery. The youthful women belong to the household of a samurai or wealthy merchant. They are lithe and slender in body and face, exuding an air of lightness and delicacy.
Toyokuni’s female figures are influenced by the style of the great Kitagawa Utamarō. Yet engaged in everyday activities, as seen here, they lack the sensuousness or suggested eroticism associated with that master’s women. Though this print can stand alone as a composition, it is one panel of a larger, still-unidentified work.
