Although his name is immediately associated with woodblock prints-especially landscapes-Hiroshige also created many paintings. The floral arrangement behind the two dancing women is called a kadomatsu (ka-doh-ma-tsoo), or "gate-pine." It was made up of bamboo stalks and pine branches, and bundled with straw matting and rope. The kadomatsu was placed outside one's doorway to serve as a temporary dwelling place for returning ancestral deities at the New Year.
