Asian Art (Japanese and Korean)
Purchased by the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1984.
Shunkin used his ink sparingly, leaving areas of unpainted silk within the river, the pockets of mist, and along the crests of the rocky cliffs, which lends a luminous quality to the painting. This heightens the sense of a pure and remote otherworldly setting, where a scholar stands in lone contemplation. This painting seems to reflect the artist's reputation for being scholarly, conservative and reserved.
Shunkin was the elder of the two sons of the artist and musician Uragami Gyokud^o (1745-1820). Compared with earlier generations of Japanese painters in the Chinese manner, Shunkin and his contemporaries had greater access to actual Chinese paintings and could more easily study and truly digest Chinese painting theory and methods.
