Prints, Drawings, and Photographs
Unlike the more common silver print, in which the silver lies in a coat of glossy gelatin emulsion on the photographic paper, platinum lies directly on the paper, producing a print with a nonreflective, matte surface and a delicate tonal range of mid-tone grays and glowing whites. [new para] In 1887, four years after platinum printing had become a viable process, Emerson published his nostalgic series of platinum prints documenting the timeless lifestyle of the marsh dwellers on the Norfolk Broads on the east coast of England. It included this image of a reed gatherer using a quant pole to propel his punt laden with cattails (gladdon), to be used to thatch cottages.
