Man Lifting Beam is one of Muybridge’s hundreds of locomotion studies of nude or seminude men, women, and children performing various common activities. They were taken between 1883 and 1887 under the sponsorship of the University of Pennsylvania for the purpose of scientific investigation, and were intended as tools for artists, anatomists, physiologists and athletes.
Using a method he had pioneered in 1878, Muybridge set up three batteries of 12 cameras with shutters that would be automatically triggered to record the figure in motion from three angles. His invention was a crucial step in the evolution of photography to motion pictures.
