水仙梅石
Although his extant paintings are mostly panoramic landscapes, Lu Zhi’s contemporaries praised his flower paintings. Before his time, flower paintings were invariably depicted in a rather shallow setting, either isolated against a blank background or at most accompanied by a nearby rock. Here, for the first time in history, Lu has depicted flowers—narcissus—within a deep landscape setting. The waterfall to the left, appearing small in the distance, is joined to the foreground by the stream that flows to the right of the plum tree.
