草書詩
愛彼心中石泉水, 幽聲夜落虛窗裏.
至今憶得臥雲時; 猶自涓涓在人耳
I love the rocky spring waters from this mountain
For its subtle sound at nightfall through empty window.
Even now recalling when "resting with clouds" (seclusion);
Quite naturally, trickling murmurs in my ear.
The Emperor Kangxi (reigned 1662–1722) held Sun in very high esteem for both his calligraphy and scholarship. Sun was commissioned to write the imperial inscriptions on stone tablets, and along with other scholars and artists, Sun helped compile a major imperially commissioned compendium of 100 volumes.
The phrase “resting with clouds” not only suggests retirement from work, but it also hints that the writer is older now and unable to climb the mountain heights to be among the clouds.
