During the Ming dynasty, painting in the style of Song dynasty (960-1279) artists was quite fashionable. Sometimes, as in the case here, a signature of a Song dynasty artist was added either because someone thought it was by the earlier artist or as an attempt to increase its age and value.
The style of a painting is often a more reliable indication of the artist than a "signature" written upon it. In this scroll, the unusually shaped, precipitous rocks, the low-level view into a distant valley and the multiple round rocks almost paving the stream all suggest a style that did not develop before the mid 1500s. The imagery here could be read as long-life wishes (the crane) for the difficult journey of a scholar's life to government service or enlightenment (the remote palatial roofs).
