I drank until the seventh night-hour. After becoming drunk, I inscribed this calligraphy.

Zha was primarily a scholar and teacher and his extant paintings are few. The chaos during and soon after the Manchu conquest that established the Qing dynasty seriously affected Zha. He lost his house with its magnificent garden but built another garden around 1660 that was famous for its rocks.
This painting soon found its way into the collection of Minagawa Kien, 1734-1807, and it was one of the rare Chinese "literati" paintings at that time in Japan.
