This cropped view of a reclining tiger brings the viewer up very close to the subject. The suggestion of a few long blades of grass in the lower left and the sparse bamboo branches above provide the only hint of a background setting. The realism of the image blends the naturalism of the Maruyama School, which is part of the Kishi heritage, together with Western influence.
Chikudō was from a samurai household. He lived in Kyoto and studied the Kano School method before becoming a star pupil of Kishi Renzan, who adopted him as his son. He specialized in animal paintings and landscapes, and he was especially fond of painting tigers.
