Mrs. John H. Roberts, Jr.; given to the Indianapolis Museum of Art in 1973.
One of the great traditions of snow landscape painting came from an early paragon of painting, Li Cheng (??, 919-967). In fact, the title-slip on the outside of this scroll attributes this painting to Li. However, the style of this painting, from the black dots with (white) color on top to the strong, vertical arrangement, is very similar to that of Lan Ying, who lived much later.
An area of silk in the upper right corner, where an artist's inscription might have been located, is noticeably discolored. Perhaps the actual artist's name was effaced so that the painting could be made more valuable by an attribution to a much earlier and more revered master.
