Among the Nupe, Hausa, and Yoruba of Nigeria, flowing embroidered robes with large sleeves are powerful symbols of wealth and status. Usually worn by kings and nobility on formal and ceremonial occasions, the robes are made from strips of cotton cloth woven by men on horizontal looms.
The elaborate hand embroidery is also done by men using silk and cotton threads. The swirled oval pattern on the front and back is common. It originated with Muslim peoples to the north and spread throughout many areas of western Africa.
