Most chiefs and important dignitaries wear a garment patterned with hand-woven strips that run lengthwise. A large pocket extending from the neck opening to the waist is often attached to the front of the robe.
This robe, which was acquired from chief Sendro of Gompa village in 1943, exhibits a masterful display of the weaver’s art. The asymmetrical stripes and two exquisite bands of tie-dye in two shades of blue decorate the entire robe. A woven pocket, set at a diagonal just below the neck opening, interrupts the linear plane and greatly enhances its visual interest.
