- This angular, pensive figure exemplifies the introspective and world-weary spirit often associated with Symbolism. Minne was an influential Belgian member of the movement.
- The piece exists in many variations. This plaster was used to cast bronze versions of what has become Minne’s most famous work. The brown wash on its surface is probably a result of the casting process.
