Until the early 20th century, brides from the city of Fez in Morocco traditionally wore elaborate long belts over their wedding caftans. The floral motifs and geometric patterns on this belt were inspired by 15th-century Hispano-Moresque textiles. The belt designs are divided into sections with distinct borders.
The belts were folded in halves or thirds and were wrapped around the waist several times to create great volume. Because their complicated production required specialized workshops and the use of costly metallic threads, these belts were very expensive.
