The main section of this shawl was woven with wool, but cotton threads were used in the patterned areas. After the weaving was completed, the shawl was dyed. The patterns woven with cotton did not absorb the dye and therefore remained white. Young girls would wear white shawls, young married women wore red, and older ladies donned blue shawls over their heads.
The motifs on these shawls resemble combs, snakes, jewelry, and tattoos and are made up of zigzags, diamonds, chevrons, and triangles. All were associated with religious and traditional beliefs.
