Gift of Mr. and Mrs. Harrison Eiteljorg
Collected by Eric Robertson of Robertson African Arts, New York near Abakaliki, Nigeria in 1981; (Jane Steinsnyder, Philadelphia, PA) sold on July 26, 1982 to Harrison Eiteljorg [1903-1997] of Indianapolis; donated to the IMA 1989
Artists who make masquerade outfits such as this, are called “people who weave body spirit.” It is the artist’s task to connect the spirit world with the human world. The garment is as important as the mask, and together they represent the powerful community of souls who directly affect the living. Maskers wear gloves, boots and neck coverings to contain their spiritual force.
